Sports and Entertainment Marketing Students Add Spirit to the CASHS Field House
Students currently enrolled within the Sports and Entertainment Marketing classes at the high school have been working over the last two months with the administration and their teachers to bring spirit to the blank walls of the CASHS Field House. Mr. David Livengood, CASHS Business Teacher, created the idea of placing life size stickers, Fat Heads, on the Field House walls of outstanding student athletes. The students began working together to create a layout of the Field House and where they would place the Fat Head like stickers. After a layout was created, the students were tasked with determining which students would be selected to represent the school. Students within the course created an outline of requirements that student athletes must exemplify in order to receive the honor. Requirements include 3.2 grade point average or higher, no discipline problems, team leader, and shows school spirit. Letters were drafted to both high school sport coaches for recommendations and to local businesses that could assist in printing the stickers or helping to donate financially. We are currently waiting to hear back from local businesses to have the stickers printed. The students and teachers within the course are excited to honor our student athletes in this unique way. As students graduate they will be presented with their Fat Head and a new student will take their place within on the Field House wall. We hope that this project will lead to positive feedback from the community and we can expand the project into the halls of the high school showcasing our outstanding academic students, projects, and teaching practices.

Students Gain Hands on Experience within Career Fields
Students throughout the Chambersburg Senior High School are dominating the conversation at home with their parents to discuss what it is like to work in their desired career field. Students participating in the Service Learning program, a branch of Workforce Development, are leaving school to volunteer at local businesses specializing in career fields they one day hope to work for. These individuals are gaining valuable experience in learning what it takes to be an employee and member of the various career fields. Students volunteer at the Chambersburg Borough Fire Department, the CASHS Language Arts, various CASD elementary schools, CASHS School Based Enterprises, CASHS Athletic Training Department, Manito and Laurel Life, and Summit Health. Students elect the placement of their experience based on their current career choice and a relationship is then created to provide this valuable opportunity. The program has allowed the community to gain a better understanding of our students’ education as well as build a valuable relationship with students. During the timeframe in which students volunteer, ranging from nine weeks to all year, students complete projects that assist the organization in which they are placed to give back to the community and to learn a different aspect of the organization. Marcia Whitmore, parent to Jeremy Whitmore CASHS junior volunteering at the Chambersburg Borough Fire Department, provided this information regarding his experience, “The captains took the time to teach him about different pieces of fire apparatus that he needed experience with. They scheduled building and business inspections in the afternoon when they knew he would be present to go along. They took him on every possible fire call. Jeremy even got to go with the Fire Chief on 2 different occasions. Each of them was very in tune with teaching and wanting to give Jeremy the most valuable experience possible.” Through this program students are able to gain career experience that places them steps ahead of their classmates and will prepare them for any further education they gain. The students are experiencing more than information from a textbook, but rather real life daily experiences, daily problem solving, and critical thinking skills.

Zachary Coleman - Social Studies with Mrs. Deardorff
Here is a picture of my Mayan calendar that I got in Belize at the Mayan ruins known as Xunantunich. It was hand carved by a Mayan descendent from slate. The necklace, I bought from the same man and it's carved from jade. It's the Mayan God of harvest and growth. The week of the 21st of January, the students were researching and presenting their projects on the ancient civilizations of the Mayan, Aztec, and the Incan people. I got to share my knowledge of these indigenous people with the students and they were amazed by my "artifacts." This has been an awesome way to teach the students and give them some personal insight. I normally do a lot of one on one work with them and I especially work with the students who struggle to understand what is going on. This gives Mrs. Deardorff the opportunity to instruct and have someone else be able to touch base with some students on a personal level.
